The 2025 Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (OSPP) Award is awarded to Andrina Caratsch for the poster/PICO entitled:

Will tropical cyclones weaken in a cleaner environment? Composite perspective on ICON ensemble simulations with prescribed aerosols (Caratsch, A.; Ferrachat, S.; Lohmann, U.)

Andrina Caratsch is a PhD student at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science at ETH Zurich. Her research focuses on the role of aerosols for tropical cyclone (TC) development, investigating how cloud microphysical processes may scale up to influence TC dynamics. She employs the numerical weather prediction and climate model ICON to study aerosol-cloud interactions in TCs, aiming to refine our understanding of the TC activity under future cleaner aerosol conditions and contribute to more accurate future risk assessments.
At the conference, she presented a novel method for compositing tropical cyclones, addressing composite blurring related to vortex asymmetries and varying storm sizes. This storm-relative approach enables a more robust analysis of TC structures and their development. Preliminary results suggested that aerosol-cloud interactions may influence the TC structure and evolution.
