Claudia Schiavini is a PhD student in cotutelle between the Politecnico di Torino in Italy and the Ecole Centrale de Lyon in France. Her work focuses on the dispersion of pollutants over industrial sites, from both an experimental and a numerical point of view. She designed a realistic industrial site to compare the wind velocity and pollutant concentration fields generated by numerical simulations to those obtained with wind tunnel experiments on the reduced-scale model of the site.

The work she presented at EGU focuses on the fluctuations of concentration measured during the experimental campaign. She analysed the effects of built elements on pollutant spread, and the concentration time series at several key positions over the site. Her goal was to identify an appropriate model for the statistical distribution of the one-point concentration. This model could then be used to estimate the risks linked to fluctuations of pollutant concentration, when only the mean concentration field is known.
