We are looking for a motivated scientist (m/f/x) to optimise the usability of near-surface geophysical prospection datasets for use in precision farming and archaeology. This role involves developing and implementing a structured workflow to ensure data harmonisation, quality assurance and long-term accessibility. This workflow will promote cross-disciplinary collaboration and facilitate the creation of multimodal datasets for use across diverse scientific domains.
Your tasks
- Development of harmonised metadata standards for near-surface geophysical data within the framework of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)
- Acquisition and provision of quality-assured datasets from various geophysical sensors (e.g., electromagnetic induction, electrical resistivity tomography, gamma spectrometry, magnetics) at a reference site, with a focus on multifunctional landscapes
- Development of practical guidelines to ensure data quality in the application of geophysical sensor systems
- Close interdisciplinary collaboration with partners from agricultural sciences, archaeology, geoinformatics and other fields to promote shared data use and cross-domain integration
We offer
- The freedom to master even the most demanding challenges between basic research and practical application
- The chance to work in interdisciplinary, international teams and benefit from a variety of perspectives
- Firstclass integration into national and international research networks to work together on global challenges
- Excellent research infrastructure and research data management to optimally support your work
- Flexible working hours and a wide range of options for balancing work and care responsibilities through our family office
- Competent support and advice for international colleagues arriving at the UFZ from the ‘International Office‘

- A workplace in a vibrant region with a high life quality and social and cultural diversity
Your profile
- University degree in a geoscientific discipline, preferably with a PhD
- Strong motivation and experience of interdisciplinary and cross-institutional collaboration, ideally gained through involvement in relevant scientific projects
- Extensive and proven experience in the application of near-surface geophysical methods
- Ability to work independently with strong conceptual skills, creativity, flexibility, and a collaborative mindset
- Ideally, experience and knowledge in managing heterogeneous and cross-disciplinary datasets
- Communication skills in both written and spoken German and English
