Workflow management developer
Mercator-Océan International
Mercator Ocean International has been developing operational oceanography activities for nearly 30 years as part of its public interest mission to preserve the ocean.
Many scientific and societal challenges must be addressed in order to ensure a sustainable ocean, whether they concern the environment, biodiversity, climate change, the blue economy or education. To meet these challenges, Mercator Ocean designs, develops, operates and maintains state-of-the-art digital systems capable of describing, analysing and forecasting the state of the ocean in 3D, continuously and in real time. The scientific information is then translated to make it accessible to everyone, whether public or commercial services, policy makers, manufacturers, associations, NGOs, teachers or citizens. Mercator Ocean International thus combines scientific excellence and social commitment on a daily basis.
As a non-profit organisation under multinational governance (ES, FR, GB, IT, NO), we work in a climate of trust with our ten shareholder partners, all of whom are key players in the development of European oceanography.

About the position
Mercator Ocean International is recruiting a Workflow Management Developer to strengthen its operational ocean forecasting systems. You will work at the core of scientific production chains to design, industrialise and maintain robust and high-performance automated workflows, tailored to HPC environments. The position is embedded in a critical operational context, at the interface between software development, high-performance computing and operational oceanography, with a strong focus on standardisation and the dissemination of best practices. You will work in close interaction with all internal departments as well as with institutional, scientific and technical partners, in an international and multicultural environment. You will be particularly responsible for:
- Industrialising and deploying forecasting workflows: assessing and improving existing prototypes, optimising scripts and configurations, implementing monitoring, and carrying out the necessary testing.
- Migrating applications to workflow engines: analysing existing applications, defining priorities, designing and deploying workflows adapted to HPC constraints, and supporting their progressive deployment into the production environment.
- Ensuring performance and operational reliability: optimising the use of HPC resources, managing complex dependencies, performing performance and robustness testing, and ensuring service continuity.
- Supporting teams: training, assisting and advising developers, operators and system administrators, providing technical support, producing documentation, and contributing to the capitalisation and dissemination of best practices.
Beyond these responsibilities, you may also contribute, as needed, to other market development activities of Mercator Ocean International.
Assets for success
You hold a Master’s degree (or higher) in a scientific or engineering field. You have at least 5 years of experience in HPC workflow management for numerical forecasting systems. We are looking for candidates with the following skills:
- Strong command of workflow engines (CYLC, ecFlow, AutoSubmit), scientific programming (Fortran, Python, Shell), and a solid understanding of HPC environments and constraints.
- Knowledge of operational oceanography and forecasting sciences.
- Fluency in English (spoken, read and written).
You are recognised for your scientific rigour and curiosity, your autonomy and your ability to take initiative. Your communication skills, team spirit and collaborative mindset enable you to interact effectively with colleagues and with diverse technical and scientific communities, and to clearly communicate results both orally and in writing.
Type of contract: Fixed-term contract (specific-purpose), full-time
Desired start date: As soon as possible.
Duration: 2 years
Benefits: Flexible working hours, luncheon vouchers, paid leave and "RTT" (9 weeks), teleworking (2 days/week), sustainable mobility package, complementary health insurance
