We invite applications for a postdoctoral position at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), Brazil, within the SAMBBI project (South American Biomass Burning Inventory). The selected candidate will conduct atmospheric simulations to quantify the impact of biomass burning emissions from the Amazon on air quality in the São Paulo Metropolitan Area, focusing on critical events such as the 2019 Amazon fire crisis. The simulations will use emission estimates from the SAMBBI inventory and will include control and sensitivity experiments to isolate the contribution of Amazon fires to pollutant concentrations, supporting public policies aimed at mitigating the impacts of biomass burning on public health.
Activities include:
- Running atmospheric simulations using models such as MONAN or WRF for critical fire events;
- Evaluating the impacts of different fire control scenarios on pollutant concentrations;
- Supporting public policies aimed at mitigating the impacts of biomass burning on public health and air quality.
Desired profile:
- PhD in Meteorology, Remote Sensing, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields;
- Experience in atmospheric modeling;
- Experience with Linux, shell scripting, and Fortran;
- Programming skills in R and/or Python;
- Knowledge of large-scale data processing;
- Advanced English proficiency;
- Scientific writing skills.
The position is funded by FAPESP (São Paulo Research Foundation) for 36 months, with a monthly stipend of BRL 12,570.00.
Applications must be submitted by May 15, 2026, by sending a curriculum vitae, motivation letter, and two letters of recommendation to guilherme.mataveli@inpe.br, with the subject line "FAPESP Postdoctoral Fellowship – SAMBBI".
