Job description

We are pleased to announce two new PhD positions in the Seismology Group at the University of Hamburg, Germany. Both positions sit within our broader research effort on innovative seismic sensing, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), and advanced methods for imaging and monitoring complex structures from the shallow subsurface to large research facilities.

DAS and Seismic Wave Propagation Modelling for Structural Monitoring (Project SeiSmart)

This position focuses on modelling seismic wave propagation and wave–structure interaction in large research facilities (e.g., DESY), using in‑situ DAS measurements from the WAVE Initiative (https://wave-hamburg.eu). Tasks include numerical modelling, analysis of dense DAS data, and development of methods for structural health monitoring. A solid background in wave propagation, digital signal processing, and programming is required; experience with numerical simulation is a strong plus.

Geothermal Passive Seismic Imaging with DAS Dark Fibers (Project RUBADO)

This position focuses on passive seismic imaging using ambient noise recorded on distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) data recorded on on dark fiber infrastructure in the Upper Rhine Graben. Work includes surface‑wave tomography, noise interferometry, inversion for shallow structures, and collaboration with our project partners KIT and Geotomographie GmbH. Candidates should have a strong background in wave propagation, signal processing, and scientific programming. Experience with DAS, ambient noise methods, or inversion is an advantage.

Both positions are part-time (75%) paid at E13 TV‑L, and offer the possibility to pursue a PhD, to collaborate with national and international research partners, participate in fieldwork, conferences, and open‑science efforts, and to engage in a supportive and interdisciplinary working environment.
