PhD position in MSCA DN MiningBrines - Impact of brines and gasses extraction and CO₂ capture on the conditions of a geothermal reservoir in an intracratonic sedimentary basin
Croatian Geological Survey
The Croatian Geological Survey (HGI-CGS) is the national public research institution responsible for geological and hydrogeological investigations in Croatia. Its activities include research on geology, engineering geology, hydrogeology, mineral resources, environmental protection, and geohazards, supporting both scientific advancement and public policy.
Within the framework of the MiningBrines project, HGI-CGS is integrated into an international network of leading academic and industrial partners. This provides the candidate with access to advanced analytical facilities, multidisciplinary expertise, and opportunities for collaboration and secondments across Europe.

This PhD position is part of the MSCA Doctoral Network MiningBrines (https://miningbrines.eu/), which aims to develop sustainable strategies for the extraction and valorization of critical raw materials, energy gases, and geothermal energy from geothermal brines.
The research of this position focuses on assessing the impact of fluid extraction and CO₂ capture and reinjection on the thermo-hydro-mechanical and geochemical conditions of geothermal reservoirs in sedimentary basins. The work includes the development of integrated geological models, geochemical and petrophysical characterizations of the reservoir and brines, and numerical simulations to evaluate fluid flow, stress redistribution, and water–rock interaction processes.
The methodological approach used in this investigation combines field work, laboratory analyses, and numerical modelling. The candidate will benefit from secondments at partner institutions, including industrial partners, within an international and interdisciplinary research environment.
Applicants must submit a written application. The application must indicate the position applied for and must include all documents that provide evidences of meeting the described requirements, including:
- curriculum vitae (CV),
- application letter and motivation letter,
- a summary of a scientific article of the applicant’s choice, not exceeding 500 words,
- two letters of recommendation from former teachers and/or supervisors with contact details for verification,
- copies of diploma(s) confirming completed studies and additional documents describing the completed studies (Diploma Supplement),
- an official document showing the weighted average grade obtained during undergraduate and graduate studies or during a former single-cycle university study program, or proof of additional requirements listed under point 2,
- proof of English language proficiency (copy of certificate, transcript of records, or other appropriate document demonstrating B2 level),
- administrative documents proving compliance with the mobility rule of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks program.
Applications with supporting documentation must be submitted no later than 30 April 2026 by email to natjecaji@hgi-cgs.hr in a single PDF file in Croatian or English language, clearly indicating the position applied for: “Suradnik na projektu MiningBrines”.
