Job description

The Marine and Coastal Geosensing Group at the University of Houston (UH) invites applications for up to three fully funded PhD positions beginning in Spring or Fall 2027.

Our research is driven by instrumentation development and quantitative data analysis. We use satellite, terrestrial, and marine geodetic techniques to measure changes in Earth’s surface and investigate the underlying physical processes. Successful applicants will work as graduate Research Assistants (RAs) on federally funded projects in one of the following areas. Students are also encouraged to pursue their own interests within the group’s broader research themes.

  1. Development of an autonomous surface vehicle for GNSS-Acoustic surveys. This project focuses on developing a new autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) for GNSS-Acoustic seafloor geodetic surveys. The student will work closely with collaborators at universities and industry partners while developing expertise in seafloor geodesy and the use of state-of-the-art ASVs. Applicants should have intermediate to advanced programming skills.
  2. Quantifying error sources in GNSS-Acoustic seafloor geodesy. This project will develop methods to quantify and mitigate errors in GNSS-Acoustic observations. Its broader goal is to establish a rigorous noise model that can guide improved data-collection and processing strategies. The student will have opportunities to participate in UNOLS research cruises and gain hands-on experience with instrument deployment and operation.
  3. Novel applications of geosensing techniques. This project will apply one or multiple geosensing techniques—including GNSS, InSAR, satellite altimetry, and related methods—to detect and quantify changes along continental margins and coastal regions. Potential research topics include crustal deformation, land subsidence, and sea-level change. The student will develop strong skills in quantitative analysis, geodetic data processing, and scientific interpretation throughout the PhD program.

Successful applicants will receive full support as graduate RAs in UH’s Geosensing Systems Engineering & Sciences (GSES) program. Funding includes a monthly stipend starting at $3,000, provided for 12 months per year.
