Job description

Postdoctoral Researcher / Research Scientist

Department of Earth Sciences and Polar Research Center | Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, UAE

Position overview

The Department of Earth Sciences and Polar Research Center at Khalifa University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher / Research Scientist to contribute to research in the Himalaya, principally Nepal. The position focuses on the connections among regional climate, cryosphere change, and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), with opportunities to help advance research, collaboration, and capacity-building through the Emirates Polar Program.

The successful candidate will also contribute to research on Neogene to recent flood histories and lake deposits in the Himalayan foreland and adjacent basins. This work will examine deposits associated with rivers draining the Himalaya, including those underlying the Kathmandu and Pokhara valleys, and explore how Pleistocene to recent flood records may relate to climate change and tectonic processes.

Research focus and responsibilities

Himalayan hazards. Contribute to research on regional climate, cryosphere change, and GLOF-related hazards, with a primary geographic focus on Nepal.

Flood and lake records. Investigate Neogene to recent flood deposits and lake sedimentary records to improve understanding of past environmental and geomorphic change.

Climate and tectonics. Explore links among flooding, climate variability and change, and tectonic processes.

Collaboration. Work with Khalifa University, the Emirates Polar Program, and relevant regional and international research partners.

Research communication. Support scholarly publications, presentations, and collaborative engagement activities.

Required qualifications

Education. PhD in Earth Sciences, Geophysics, Geology, Geoscience, or a closely related discipline.

Research record. A record of research excellence commensurate with career stage.

Professional skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, together with a collaborative and interdisciplinary mindset.
