The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS), a premier marine research and education institute and a unit of Arizona State University (ASU), is seeking an experienced and motivated Science Education Coordinator to join our team. The successful candidate will report to the Education Manager and Education and Engagement Manager.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Science Education Coordinator plays a key role in delivering marine science education experiences for local and international students. Working collaboratively with ASU BIOS scientists, educators, captains, teaching assistants, and operations staff, the Coordinator delivers immersive educational experiences that connect participants with active scientific research, Bermuda’s unique marine environment, and ASU BIOS’s mission of advancing ocean and atmospheric science.

The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of ASU BIOS’s Ocean Academy and Educational Expeditions programs, leading students of all ages through field investigations, laboratory activities, boating excursions, snorkeling experiences, and technology-enhanced learning opportunities. This role combines hands-on teaching, program coordination, participant support, and field operations to create engaging, safe, and memorable educational experiences.

This is a highly active, student-facing position requiring flexibility, enthusiasm, and confidence working outdoors in varying weather conditions, aboard small boats, in laboratory settings, and in the water. Evening and weekend work is required based on program schedules. Due to the hands-on nature of the position, the successful candidate must be willing to reside either on the ASU BIOS campus or in Bermuda’s east end.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Deliver curriculum-aligned Ocean Academy programming, including the Curriculum Enrichment Program (CEP), Mid-Atlantic Robotics in Education (MARINE), Climate Classroom, and other educational initiatives
• Design and deliver engaging STEM learning experiences incorporating circuits, robotics, ocean acoustics, environmental sensors, data analysis, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), marine technology, and other emerging educational tools.
• Support the delivery of Educational Expeditions for visiting universities, high schools, middle schools, and lifelong learning groups through laboratory activities, classroom instruction, field investigations, and experiential learning opportunities.
• Assist with program logistics, scheduling, participant communications, educational records, and other administrative tasks supporting the successful delivery of Ocean Academy and Educational Expeditions programs.
• Support visiting instructors in the planning and delivery of educational programs while they are on the ASU BIOS campus.
• Lead boating, snorkeling, and field-based learning experiences while maintaining the highest standards of participant safety, risk management, and educational engagement.
• Prepare, organize, inventory, and maintain educational laboratories, teaching resources, field equipment, scientific instrumentation, and snorkel gear to ensure programs operate efficiently.
• Support the planning and delivery of ASU BIOS summer programs, including Ocean Science Camp, Marine Science Internship, and Innovations for the Environment.
• Maintain compliance with ASU BIOS safeguarding, child protection, and health and safety policies, reporting concerns in accordance with institutional procedures.
• Communicate with the Ocean Academy and Educational Expeditions teams regarding weather-related program changes and assist with operational schedule adjustments as required.
• Serve as the primary on-site contact for non-emergency operational matters involving Educational Expeditions groups and support incident reporting in accordance with ASU BIOS Health and Safety procedures.
• Foster an inclusive, inquiry-driven learning environment by maintaining a visible presence on campus and actively encouraging student curiosity, participation, and scientific exploration.
• Support program evaluation by collecting, managing, and reporting participant feedback and educational outcomes.
• Integrate authentic ASU BIOS research, scientific instrumentation, marine technology, and real-world datasets into educational programming where appropriate.
• Collaborate with ASU BIOS scientists and education staff to translate current marine and atmospheric research into engaging educational experiences for diverse audiences.
• Support ASU BIOS outreach and engagement initiatives through participation in public events, educational demonstrations, campus tours, interviews and other media activities that promote the organization’s mission and programs.
• Perform other duties as assigned that support the educational objectives of ASU BIOS.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in science or science education
• Experience teaching or facilitating learning at the university, secondary, or informal science education level
• 2+ years of prior experience leading educational groups
• 2+ years of prior experience leading outdoor education
• Swimming and snorkel competency
• First Aid and CPR certified
• Ability to communicate scientific research and educate all age groups (from age 6 to 100)

MINIMUM SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

1. Experience delivering marine technology, robotics, GIS, coding, remote sensing, oceanographic instrumentation, or engineering education.

2. Experience working aboard research vessels or supporting field-based marine science programs.

3. Snorkel leadership, lifeguarding, or SCUBA certification (PADI Rescue Diver, Divemaster, Scientific Diver, or equivalent) is considered an asset.

4. Experience using educational technologies including AR, VR, drones, ROVs, sensors, or scientific instrumentation.
