Job description

The Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research on Arctic gateway–permafrost climate system modeling and proxy–model integration.

Main Responsibilities

  • Analyze Arctic climate and environmental changes using PMIP, Earth System Model outputs, CMIP6 simulations, and climate reanalysis datasets.
  • Integrate high-resolution sediment-based paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental reconstructions with climate model outputs.
  • Investigate mechanisms linking oceanic changes through Arctic gateways to environmental changes in Arctic permafrost regions.
  • Assess the impacts of permafrost thaw on Arctic coastal environments and identify underlying environmental change mechanisms.
  • Participate in national and international collaborative research projects with domestic and overseas research institutions.
  • Publish research findings in SCI(E)-indexed international journals and present results at international scientific conferences.
  • Contribute to project management, reporting, and dissemination of research outcomes.

Academic Fields
Paleoclimatology, Climate Science, Earth System Science, Atmospheric Science, Oceanography, Earth Science, Climate and Environmental Data Science, or related disciplines.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a relevant field, or the ability to submit a doctoral degree certificate by the scheduled appointment date in November 2026.
  • At least one SCIE-indexed journal paper published or accepted as first author within the past three years as of September 21, 2026.
  • Understanding of paleoclimate modeling and Earth System Modeling.
  • Understanding of CMIP6, PMIP, and climate reanalysis datasets.
  • Understanding of interactions among the Arctic Ocean, cryosphere, atmosphere, and permafrost systems.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, R, or similar programming languages for climate and environmental data analysis.
  • Experience with NetCDF-based climate data processing and spatiotemporal statistical analysis.
  • Experience working in Linux and High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments.
  • Ability to write scientific manuscripts in English and participate in international collaborative research.

Working Conditions

  • Contract period: Up to a maximum of five years, with annual renewal based on work performance.
  • Workplace: Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI), Incheon, Republic of Korea.
  • Salary: In accordance with KOPRI's internal payment standards, with research performance incentives available.
  • Benefits include statutory social insurance, severance pay where applicable, and possible access to dormitory accommodation for employees living far from the institute.
  • Opportunities may be available to visit Antarctic and Arctic research stations and conduct field research.

The position is open to both Korean and international applicants. Video interviews may be arranged for applicants residing overseas.
