Job description

The Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Florida invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Remote Sensing of Earth and Planetary Systems with an expected start date of August 16, 2027. Advanced remotely-sensed geophysical data (e.g., gravity, laser, radar, GNSS, magnetic, imaging spectroscopy, imaging/stereo imaging) collected with ground-, air-, and space-based sensors are essential to studies of terrestrial and/or planetary processes and properties. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, mentor students for M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, and conduct a dynamic, externally funded research program in an area of Remote Sensing of Earth and/or Planetary Systems. We are particularly interested in candidates who will engage in interdisciplinary research with the Department, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and/or University of Florida, e.g. the Astraeus Space Institute, and with the potential to participate in current or future airborne or space missions.

The Department of Geological Sciences resides in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Department faculty members have broad expertise in Earth and Planetary Sciences, including geophysics, paleoclimatology, volcanology, petrology, tectonics, hydrology, geomorphology, sedimentology, marine geology, biogeochemistry, astrobiology, paleontology, and geoscience education among others. Available resources include state-of-the-art departmental Research Facilities, the Nanoscale Research Center, the UF Water Institute , the HiPerGator supercomputer and the UF AI Informatics Research Institute . Additionally, the UF Astraeus Space Institute supports and connects researchers in space science across the state. Astraeus also offers access to an on-campus Missions Operations Center for supporting in-space activities and missions.

How to apply

For full consideration, applications must include: (1) a brief letter of application, summarizing the applicant's qualifications, interests, future research goals, and suitability for the position, (2) a complete curriculum vitae, (3) a research statement detailing current activities and future research plans, (4) a statement summarizing teaching experience and interests, and (5) a list of names and contact information of at least three references. After initial review, letters of recommendation will be requested from the references for selected applicants.

Applications will be reviewed beginning November 1, 2026. Only complete applications will be reviewed on that date. The position will remain open until filled, and applications received after the initial review date will be considered at the discretion of the committee and/or hiring authority.

Inquiries about the position should be directed to the Search Committee Chair, Dr. Courtney Sprain (csprain@ufl.edu).

All candidates for employment are subject to a pre-employment screening which includes a review of criminal records, reference checks, and verification of education.

The selected candidate will be required to provide an official transcript to the hiring department upon hire. A transcript will not be considered “official” if a designation of “Issued to Student” is visible. Degrees earned from an educational institution outside of the United States require evaluation by a professional credentialing service provider approved by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), which can be found at http://www.naces.org/.
