The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University located in Palisades, NY, invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist to work in a multidisciplinary team of senior and junior scientists engages in the MINERALS Project develop a mineral properties database for geophysical modeling, particularly for the interpretation of seismic tomography models and geodynamic processes in Earth's deep interior.
This position is associated with the project "Modeling Earth from Atomic to Global Scale (MINERALS)," funded bu the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation. The primary goal of the MINERALS Project is to develop a mineral properties database for geophysical modeling, particularly for the interpretation of seismic tomography models and their geodynamic implications. The successful candidate will conduct computational simulations of minerals under extreme pressure and temperature conditions and will work in a team comprised of mineral physicists, seismologists, and geodynamicists to advance quantitative links between atomic-scale material behavior and the large-scale structure of the Earth.
Duties and Responsibilities will include:
- Augment database of thermodynamic and thermoelastic properties of phases in the lower mantle, extending the database from properties of silica in various phases of the lower mantle to the NAL and CF phases, as well as additional compositions of bridgmanite and post-perovskite. Use ab initio DFT-based calculations and machine-learning interatomic potentials derived from DFT calculations.
- Disseminate results with the public via national and international conferences and seminars and with the general public via media outlets and outreach.
- Prepares research publications and reports and contributes to: patentable inventions, important research techniques and/or theories that significantly impact the science.
- Receives general supervision from the Professor/PI and interacts with Co-PIs.
Qualifications
Applicants should have completed a PhD in mineral physics, materials science, computational physics, geophysics, or a related field and have at least three years of post-PhD research experience that includes software development, ab-initio calculations, and development of machine learning methods. Prior experience with density functional theory simulations, high-performance computing, machine learning, and/or computational modeling of materials is required.
The search will remain open for at least 30 days after the ad appears and will continue until the position is filled.
Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1, contingent upon performance and funding.
Columbia University benefits accompany this Officer of Research appointment.
