EGU General Assembly 2026 – Meeting programme and provisional press conferences

24 March 2026

The programme for the 2026 General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) is now available online

This year’s press conferences pull back the curtain on a planet at a breaking point, moving beyond abstract data to confront the raw frictions of our climate reality. From the ghost currency of academic prestige to the literal energy droughts threatening our green transition, these briefings track the human toll of loss of lifetime due to fire and heat, the legislative black holes in European law, and the hidden giants of the deep sea. Scientists will be providing the forensic evidence of a world in flux and the urgent blueprints required to navigate it, before the window for adaptation closes for good.

The meeting, the largest geosciences conference in Europe, is anticipated to bring together over 20,000 scientists and is a great opportunity to hear about the latest research in the Earth, planetary and space sciences. It runs from May 3 until May 8 and is taking place at the Austria Center Vienna, in Vienna, Austria and online.

Meeting programme online

All sessions and abstracts are now available online. The programme is searchable by name, keywords (e.g.: Greenland, turtle), session topic (e.g.: climate, planetary sciences), and other parameters. You can generate your personal programme by selecting single contributions or complete sessions from the meeting programme. Reporters may also find the list of papers of public interest, selected by session conveners, useful.

Press conferences

We are planning around 6 press conferences at the EGU General Assembly, which will take place at the Press Centre located on the Yellow Level (Ground Floor) of the Austria Center Vienna. Below are the topics to be presented to journalists this year:

■ PC1: A trial by fire: Between preparedness, mitigation, and adaptation on a burning planet
■ PC2: A transition under pressure? From Dunkelflauten, Energy Droughts, and wildfire smoke to the realities of urban adaptations.
■ PC3:  The anatomy of emissions: Measuring emissions from what we wear, cook, drive, and breathe...before it’s too late!
■ PC4: Can early warning maps outpace systemic vulnerability? Insights on extreme fire, heat, and gaps in EU climate laws.
■ PC5: Rumbles from the deep: On Alaskan megatsunamis, active submarine volcanoes, and the seismoacoustic signals of blue whales.
■ PC6: NASA: Juno update

Union-wide sessions of interest

We have an exciting line-up this year of Union-wide sessions, including great debates, union symposia, and short courses that could be relevant for media participants:
Have we broken the Earth’s water cycle? Pathways from Planetary Boundaries to local Safe Operating Spaces
Evidence-based policymaking in an era of increasing climate hazards and risks
The ethics of using Artificial Intelligence in the Geosciences - Opportunities and Risks
The future of scientific publishing – do we need scientific journals?
Creating safe spaces in academia: recognizing and responding to harassment
Invited to interview? Prepare for success with job applications and interviews in industry and academia

Media registration

Members of the media, public information officers and science bloggers (conditions apply) are now invited to register for the meeting online, free of charge.
