Liz has more than ten years’ experience as a science writer and holds a degree in materials science from the University of Oxford, and a PhD in materials science and Certificate in Wildlife Biology, both from the University of Bristol, UK. The EGU Science Journalism Fellowship is an annual competition open to professional journalists wishing to report on ongoing research in the geosciences.

Gee in recognition of his fundamental contributions to the study of orogens and of his outstanding and inspiring leadership of EUROPROBE. David Gee received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Cambridge before moving to the Geological Survey of Sweden in 1966.

He was the 2022 global youth ambassador of the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate (GAUC). He helps promote collaboration among PhD candidates in their early careers in the ECS Rep Assistant Team. Santiago Duarte is currently pursuing his PhD in hydroinformatics at the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, specializing in the analysis of hydroclimatic patterns utilizing data mining and machine learning techniques.

If Jatropha curcas was planted over 3% of the Arabian Desert, that’s almost 70,000 km 2 of desert (1 km 2 is roughly 100 rugby pitches). This is a massive area but, in comparison to the area of the Arabian Desert, it’s tiny! The trees could absorb the same amount of carbon as that produced by motor vehicles in Germany over 20 years.

In another presentation, researchers will show evidence of elevated levels of radionuclides (fallout from Chernobyl and nuclear weapons testing) in glaciers across the globe. Another team will show how pesticides sprayed in crops are leaving residues in honey, pollen and beeswax.

The training consists of combining theoretical lessons in the classroom and field practice in small groups of 3-4 students, with focus on some of the more modern measurement methods (high-resolution penetrometry, optical instruments for specific surface area of snow, X-ray tomography, etc.).
