James Rae BG Biogeosciences The 2015 Division Outstanding Young Scientist Award is awarded to James Rae for his contributions to our understanding of the past climate change and its causes. A recent study, led by Dr James Rae of the University of St Andrews, found that changes in ocean circulation in the North Pacific caused a massive ‘burp’ of CO2 to be released from the deep ocean into the atmosphere, helping to warm the planet sufficiently to trigger the end of the ice age.

D’Odorico highlighted the impact of climate change on irrigation and investigated the economic value of water in agriculture by developing a biophysical method that can be used to determine the value of water in the agricultural sector. This has provided an important tool for estimating the value of irrigation water in regions where water is not priced.

Read more The role of cyclonic eddies in the detachment and separation of Loop Current eddies Ocean Science DOI 10.5194/os-22-821-2026 10 March 2026 We analyze 29 years of satellite altimetry to investigate the detachment of Loop Current Eddies in the Gulf of Mexico. Over half of the Loop Current eddies reattach within a month, while 42 % separate and drift westward.

Such cascade phenomenology is at the basis of most turbulent models. I will discuss in this talk how progresses in numerical simulations and laboratory experiments gradually changed such simple vision (starting from Landau objection in the 50’s), leading to a new picture where quasi-singularities living beyond Kolmogorov scale play a central role.
