Home / Awards & medals / Arne Richter Awards for Outstanding Early Career Scientists / 2025 / Renelle Dubosq
This groundbreaking technique has enabled Dubosq to document a new precipitation hardening mechanism in garnet, where the diffusion of iron along grain boundaries results in the nucleation of iron-rich clusters. These clusters act as barriers for migrating dislocations, leading to localized hardening. This discovery has profound implications for our understanding of mechanical failure in the lower continental crust and the nucleation of deep earthquakes.

Home / Awards & medals / Jean Baptiste Lamarck Medal / 2016 / Lucas Lourens
His seminal 1996 paper resulted in an ATS for the Pliocene–Pleistocene that still forms the basis of the standard Geologic Time Scale (GTS2012) for this time interval. In addition, his pioneering contributions on the influence of the very long period orbital cycles on time scales of tens of millions of years and of the effects of tidal dissipation and dynamical ellipticity were critical to pave the way for current thinking about such critical issues.

This session draws on a wide range of disciplines to examine our physical understanding, monitoring, modelling, predicting, and assessment of environmental, social, and economic impacts of rapidly emerging dry/hot-extremes NH9.16 : PICO : 08:30–10:15 ( CEST ) PICO spot 3b Enabling Reproducibility in Earth System Science research through open and FAIR data, workflows and models Geological awareness of the importance of the reproducibility of research results has increased considerably in recent years.
Home / Awards & medals / Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Awards / 2018 / Claudia Mohr
During her postdoc at the University of Washington, Seattle, Mohr co-developed an innovative inlet for chemical ionisation mass spectrometry now commercially available and pivotal in the identification of organic compounds contributing to e.g. the growth of newly formed particles in the atmosphere.
Home / Awards & medals / Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Awards / 2024 / Sarah Incel
Sarah Incel is receiving the award for her outstanding research in the field of experimental mineral and rock physics and her novel understanding of the interplay between mineral phase transformations and the generation of intermediate-depth earthquakes; a long-standing open question in geology due to the remoteness of phenomena occurring at up to a few hundreds of kilometers depth in the Earth, and the chemical complexity and tremendous heterogeneity of Earth’s upper mantle. ncel managed impressively to overcome all the challenges of performing experimental work under extreme conditions and pioneering new experimental and analytical techniques, mastering and combining knowledge in petrology, thermodynamics, geophysics, seismology and rock mechanics.
Home / Awards & medals / Arthur Holmes Medal & Honorary Membership / 2014 / Kevin C. A. Burke
Burke quickly recognised that the continents would hold the record of plate interaction in deep time and in the early 1970s, in conjunction with John Dewey, he wrote a series of papers that fundamentally changed the way we think about the formation of continental lithosphere, the Precambrian in particular Burke’s career started in Africa in 1953, and since then he has developed an understanding of African geology that spans the entire record of Earth’s history.
