József Kótai József Kótai was born in Sopron, Hungary, in 1940, and he studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Budapest. Today Mr. Kótai is a sculptor, artist and silversmith by profession. In Hungary his works of art are permanently exhibited in Budapest in the National Museum and in the Museum for Applied Art, in Pécs in the Janus Pannonius Museum, in Sopron in the Liszt Ferenc Museum, and in Kecskemét in the Katona József Museum.

His family moved to Belfast in 1925, when he was nine years old, and he spent the remainder of his school days at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. He entered the Queen's University of Belfast in 1934, graduating with the degrees of B.Se. in 1937 and M.Sc. in 1938.

EGS David Robert Bates Medallist - 2000 Siegfried J. Bauer in recognition of his eminent contributions in the fields of aeronomy and planetary atmospheres Prof. Siegfried Bauer received his PhD in geophysics, meteorology and physics in 1953 from the Univ. of Graz in Austria.

He was involved in political activities in the U.S.A. in 1967, on Cambridge City Council in the 1970’s and is now a Labour peer in the House of Lords (a part time job with some high scientific content).
