Usoskin’s scientific work has been recognised with honours and awards, including the Knight, 1st class, of the Order of the Lion of Finland (2013), UNESCO Personal Award for Research in the Basic Sciences (1997), Award of the International Science Foundation for scientists of the former USSR (1993). Besides his scientific achievements, Usoskin has played key roles in servicing the space community.
Home / News / Press releases / Impact of WWII bombing raids felt at edge of space
The research is presented in the paper ‘The Ionospheric response over the UK to major bombing raids during World War II’ published in the EGU open access journal Annales Geophysicae on 26 September 2018. The study was conducted by Christopher J. Scott (Department of Meteorology, University of Reading, UK) and Patrick Major (Department of History, University of Reading, UK).
Home / Awards & medals / Fridtjof Nansen Medal / 2019 / Anne-Marie Tréguier
Her early work on the influence of the bottom topography on eddy processes brought first evidence of the role of standing eddies in the momentum balance of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

Tostevin, a lecturer at the University of Cape Town who teaches a course on the geology of South Africa and manages a language diversity programme, will work closely with Batande Getyengana, a student at the same institution and a native isiXhosa speaker, to create a geological dictionary in isiXhosa to help inspire public engagement in a population that historically has been excluded by the geoscience community.

Encyclopedia of Geosciences (EG) EG will work as a compilation, a collection of articles that fills the gap between traditional review articles and online encyclopediae. It will feature scientific review articles written by experts in various fields of the geosciences and published in the already existing EGU open-access peer-reviewed journals.
Home / News / Webinars and online events / Uneven Ground: Addressing Vulnerabilities in Fieldwork
In recent years, there has been growing awareness of the discrimination and challenges faced by geoscientists both within and beyond academia, supported by research findings and personal accounts. However, vulnerabilities during fieldwork remain an often-overlooked aspect of this issue.
Home / News / Press releases / Curbing short-lived pollutants – a win-win for climate and air quality
A new study looking into short-lived pollutants reveals measures governments could implement to substantially improve air quality as well as fight climate change. The results, by a team of scientists from around Europe and China, are published today (24 September) in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics , an open access journal of the European Geosciences Union ( EGU ). In the EU, the reduction in life expectancy due to air pollution was 7.5 months in 2010, and legislation already in place to improve air quality aims to reduce this loss to 5.2 months by 2030.

I.Dekeyser, Dr. A. Petrenko and Dr. A. Doglioli. Her PhD research focuses on the study of eddy and filamentrary structures in the Gulf of Lion, and the impact of such structures on the coast-offshore exchanges. The study presented at the EGU 2008 shows the investigation of the formation of (sub) mesoscale eddies in the gulf, combining use of data from numerical modelling, satellite observations and in situ measurements.

The poster “ Step changes in the flood frequency curve – Quantifying effects of catchments storage thresholds” is part of her PhD thesis which she completed in March 2013 under the supervision of Günter Blöschl within the “Vienna Doctoral Programme on Water Resource Systems”.
Home / Awards & medals / Milutin Milanković Medal / 2016 / James C. Zachos
In his earlier years, Zachos contributed significantly to the understanding of biological and carbonate pumps in the ocean in the aftermath of the Cretaceous–Palaeogene boundary mass extinction event. His work on Antarctic glaciation across the Eocene–Oligocene transition, and its effect on climate and global carbon cycle resulted in landmark papers.
