He has developed an innovative conceptual framework for the study of melt inclusions from metamorphic rocks, which allows them to be compared to inclusions in magmatic/volcanic rocks. In addition, he has made important contributions to the investigation of sulphide ore deposits and the regional geology of Italy.

He has also used his detailed knowledge of the behaviour of different geomagnetic activity indices to reveal the centennial variation in both solar wind speed and the open solar flux. His investigation of quasi-annual variations in the heliosphere identified imprints on the fluxes of galactic cosmic rays reaching Earth and he has also shown how the latitudinal width of corotating interaction regions (CIRs) is a major factor in their contribution to heliospheric shielding of cosmic rays.

These findings show our food system faces regular large-scale threats. We tested whether the isotopic composition of carbon (δ 13 C) and nitrogen (δ 15 N) in wood can support timber traceability.
Home / Awards & medals / Vilhelm Bjerknes Medal / 2006 / Erich Roeckner
For Erich Roeckner to be the “father” of ECHAM means two things – first the intimate knowledge of all aspects of a modern atmospheric general circulation model, and second the experience of and contributions to a broad range of applications of the model in different contexts.

Subsequently, Schmeling focused on the physics of diapirism and produced a range of classic papers that have been influential in understanding the patterns and internal dynamics of salt structures, as well as that of diapiric structures in general. His models were performed on a scale that allowed them to be directly compared to geological observations, a topic that has always been relevant in his work.

Home / About EGU
The annual EGU General Assembly is the largest and most prominent European geosciences event, attracting over 21,000 scientists from all over the world in the year 2025. The meeting’s sessions cover a wide range of topics, including volcanology, planetary exploration, the Earth’s internal structure and atmosphere, climate, as well as energy and resources. The EGU was established in September 2002 as a merger of the European Geophysical Society (EGS) and the European Union of Geosciences (EUG), and has headquarters in Munich, Germany.

31 March 2015 Have you ever thought about how our actions affect others? When we think of rainforests, we imagine remote regions of natural beauty, with pure air and none of the atmospheric pollution that we see in the big cities. However, an international team of researchers has found evidence of manmade pollution deep inside the rainforest of Borneo in Southeast Asia.

Evans SSS Soil System Sciences The 2024 Arne Richter Award for Outstanding Early Career Scientists is awarded to Daniel L. Evans for outstanding research in the field of exploration of urban soil ecosystem services. Daniel Evans’s research contributed remarkably to our understanding of soil lifespans and threats to soils by providing first isotopic measurements of soil formation rates in arable contexts, and the first globally relevant estimates of soil lifespans.
