Home / Awards & medals / John Dalton Medal / 2023 / Taikan Oki
These are fundamental processes for integrating hydrology (via land surface schemes) into climate models, and vital for closing the water balance in major river basins. Oki is the father of the H08 model, a global-scale integrated water balance model coupling sub-models of reservoir operation, human water withdrawal, environmental flows and crop growth – one of the very first model of its kind.
Home / News / EGU news / Thank you to all EGU volunteers who gave their time in 2023.
Many of you will have interactions with one of the 3451 volunteers who help organise the annual General Assembly , either as conveners or co-conveners of sessions, as members of the Programme Groups who co-ordinate the scientific content of the meeting, or in a range of other roles.

Three of EGU ’s journals (Geoscientific Model Development, Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, and The Cryosphere) are now in the top 20 of journals in geoscience . Our publisher Copernicus has also recently included the new Google Scholar Metrics h5-index, released at the end of June 2014, on the EGU journal pages.

12 October 2017 Have you ever heard of the hole in the ozone layer? Your parents and teachers might remember that, back in the 1980s, there was a lot of talk about chemicals called CFC s (also known as freons in some countries) that were used in fridges, air conditioners and sprays.

Scheduled for publication in mid-2026, the textbook will combine an overview of the empirical literature on science communication in policy processes with a practical guide to help scientists plan and carry out their own policy engagement. As part of the project, the team aims to create an online collection of examples of formal science-for-policy communication to support learning within the research community.

Home / Awards & medals / Lewis Fry Richardson Medal / 2007 / Ulrich Schumann
Ulrich Schumann The 2007 Lewis Fry Richardson Medal is awarded to Ulrich Schumann for his fundamental and pioneering work on the ‘realizibility’ of turbulence models and their wide application in geophysical flows, notably to establish through accurate simulation the chemical effects of aircraft emissions on the stratosphere. Prof. Schumann’s research has led to important developments in the understanding and modelling of turbulence and atmospheric physics.

Donald Ross Prothero The 2025 Jean Baptiste Lamarck Medal is awarded to Donald Ross Prothero in recognition of a strong research profile in terrestrial stratigraphy, and unwavering support and education of the next generation. Donald Ross Prothero is a prolific and highly influential author of books and scientific papers, in which he has made substantial research contributions to vertebrate palaeontology, stratigraphy and geochronology.
Home / Awards & medals / Arthur Holmes Medal & Honorary Membership / 2021 / Laurent Jolivet
He produced fundamental work in the Aegean, where he described extensional lithospheric deformation and core-complex formation in the Cyclades, documenting the relationships between extensional deformations, exhumation, and magmatism. Jolivet captures the complexity of the continental lithosphere rheology in the field, showing strain localization of deformation at different levels and depths.
