Fires change the chemistry of the water above ground, and these subtle changes leave traces in the stalactites and stalagmites that form when the water drips in the caves underground. The fire signals in cave dripwater look a lot like the signals for a change in climate, so scientists have to be careful not to confuse the two.

The EGU journals are indexed in the Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, etc. We refrain from displaying the journal metrics here since citation metrics used in isolation do not describe importance, impact, or quality of a journal. However, these metrics can be found on the websites of the respective journals.

The bottom-up structure ensures that every member has a sense of ownership and a vested interest in maintaining EGU for the future”. Because of this, she says, “our members are close to the latest developments in the geosciences, which allows the organisation to benefit from a wide pool of knowledge and expertise that can help inform the Union’s strategy going forward”.

In 2014, she published a book on microstructures and textures of Earth materials, which is a seminal work for geoscientists interested in investigating processes in fields ranging from metamorphic petrology, to sedimentology and deformation analysis. For these reasons, she is a worthy recipient of the EGU 2016 Stephan Mueller Medal.

World Soil Day is held annually on 5 December to highlight the importance of healthy soils and sustainable practices. As part of World Soil Day, the EGU Soil System Sciences division is hosting a webinar to help soil researchers navigate the gap between modelling and field studies in soil sciences. The webinar will be presented by two experts in the field, who will show how modelling can expand the use of field and lab data.

“The composition of the piece of barite we pick up in the field now that has been on Earth for three and a half billion years, is exactly the same as it was when it when it actually precipitated,” says Desiree Roerdink, a geochemist at University of Bergen, Norway, and team leader of the new research.
