Home / Education / Educational resources / Jaws: The importance of shark fossils for palaeontology research
Complete shark fossils can teach us a huge amount about the extraordinary lives of these extinct animals, but palaeontologists can still learn a lot from just their teeth. Professor Kenshu Shimada, a shark palaeontologist at DePaul University in Chicago, USA, has been uncovering the mysteries of the iconic megalodon and many other extinct sharks.

My research interest resides on salt deformation, salt tectonics, and its influence on basin structures via interpretation of integrated subsurface data. In the past four years, I have focused on the deformation and evolution of the Messinian evaporites in the Levant Basin at the eastern Mediterranean through 3D seismic interpretation and well log interpretation.

Matthias Huss The 2014 Arne Richter Award for Outstanding Young Scientists is awarded to Matthias Huss for innovative contributions to improving the understanding of the mass balance and runoff of glaciers and their sensitivity to climate change. Matthias Huss has made substantial and innovative contributions to a broad range of topics in glaciology. These range from analysis of glacier outburst floods, reconstruction of mass balances and exploring climatic linkages, to modelling the response of glacier mass balance and runoff to climate change.

It also highlights opportunities to apply for a traineeship inside the European Parliament , be inspired by real-life examples of science for policy initiatives , and take a glance at the news from the Arctic, including a summary for policymakers on climate change in the area and an open letter by the research community for the Central Arctic Ocean. If you have any further questions or comments about policy opportunities that exist for scientists in Europe, don’t hesitate to get in touch !

His research interests focus on how people adapt to natural hazards and climate change. The findings presented in this poster are part of a joint research project with colleauges at the International Centre for Aceh and Indian Ocean Studies on the long-term outcomes of the reconstruction of Aceh, Indonesia following the 2004 tsunami.
