She is also applying these 3D lithospheric models to the evaluation of temperature distributions in the lithosphere, aiming to understand potential geohazards such as earthquakes and the stability zone of gas hydrates in seafloor sediments. The awarded poster focuses on the application of a new methodology for characterising the oceanic crust.
Home / Awards & medals / Division Outstanding Young Scientist Awards / 2012 / Diana Rose
She performed field measurements in a wide range of environments from polluted Chinese megacities to pristine tropical rainforests, and she gathered a unique CCN data set of unprecedented comprehensiveness and precision. The scientific work and achievements of Rose led to a strong reduction of uncertainties in the modeling and assessment of aerosol effects on clouds.

Mary Anning Conferences aim to promote novel and innovative research related to biogeochemical cycles in the Earth system and are named in honour of Mary Anning (1799–1847), an English palaeontologist and fossil collector. The conferences intend to bring together experienced and career scientists for an interdisciplinary discussion on all aspects of chemical, physical, and biological processes and their interactions in the atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere.

Home / Awards & medals / Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (OSPP) Awards / 2022 / Mia Sophie Specht
At the EGU 2022 she presented results of her research on the influence of subsurface tropical instability waves (subTIWs) on ocean temperatures in the tropical Atlantic Ocean. She showed that subTIWs can induce vertical mixing which leads to a temperature increase below the mixed layer.
Home / Awards & medals / Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (OSPP) Awards / 2022 / Tom Müller
He is co-supervised by Bettina Schaefli (University of Bern, CH) and Stuart Lane (University of Lausanne, CH). During his PhD, he spent most of his summers camping in the forefield of the Otemma glacier, collecting various datasets such a geophysical surveys, groundwater well observations, water isotopes and geochemistry or stream discharge among others.

In the international graduate school StRATEGy (Surface Processes, Tectonics and Georesources: The Andean foreland basin of Argentina), he highlighted 2 new mechanisms associated with plate interaction at the convergent margin: (i) trench hindrance associated with slab steepening, which he presented at the EGU, and (2) crustal contraction and transpression of continental crust associated with the arrival of a flat slab (e.g. the Pampean and Laramide flat slab).

The new website is a hub of information on careers , events and resources that relate to young scientists in the Earth, planetary and space sciences. Young scientists are also invited to get involved in the Union’s activities. Please check the new website for more information.
Home / Awards & medals / Outstanding Student Poster and PICO (OSPP) Awards / 2016 / Dursun Acar
Dursun is a graduate student of Marine Sciences and Management at Istanbul University. He also works for the Eastern Mediterranean Centre for Oceanography and Limnology at Istanbul Technical University. His broad field of interest mainly focuses on technical improvements on collecting data in palaeoceanographic studies and tectonic.
