The EGU General Assembly, the largest geosciences conference in Europe, attracted some 15,000 attendees to Vienna in 2018. With such a large number of participants, many flying to the Austrian capital to attend, the meeting has a large environmental impact, which the EGU is seeking to reduce through implementing a number of green measures .

Jannes Münchmeyer is a PhD Student at GFZ Potsdam and the Humboldt University Berlin under the supervision of Prof. Frederik Tilmann and Prof. Ulf Leser. His research focuses on the detection and real-time assessment of earthquakes using machine learning methods. He developed deep learning methods for earthquake early warning and the real-time estimation of earthquake magnitude and location.

At the EGU General Assembly 2025, Bram introduced HazMiner, a text mining tool that automatically extracts the location, timing, and impact of geo-hydrological hazard events worldwide. HazMiner processes online news articles in 58 languages using large language models. Its paragraph-based approach enabled the identification of 21,964 hazard events from the analysis of 2.7 million news articles published between 2020 and 2023.

12 January 2021 During the past few days, we have heard from many of you in our community who are facing extremely challenging working conditions in light of the extended lockdowns and virtual teaching requirements around the globe. We empathise with the stark professional and personal challenges that EGU members and their families are currently facing and have therefore decided to extend the abstract submission deadline for #vEGU21 by one week.
