Peter Westbroek published his ideas, on behalf and with the help of the “Commonwealth Fund Book Program” (New York), in his book “Life as a geological force. Dynamics of the Earth”. More recently, his laboratory has produced the state-of-the-art work in areas of manganese oxidation by bacteria, and the role of bacteria in the manganese cycle on Earth.

In 1980 he was elected a Foreign Member of the German Geodetic Commission at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences, Munich and in 1983 he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Austrian National Academy of Sciences. He is a recipient of the 1984 Distinguished Scholar Award at The Ohio State University.

Leopold and then Prof. W.G. Wolman, before spending a year as a research collaborator at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. In 1965 Mike returned to the UK to undertake a NERC Research Fellowship back at the University of Cambridge. In 1967 he moved to Bristol as a lecturer, then in 1973 moved to be Professor of Physical Geography at the University of Leeds, where he has remained since.

In analyzing these measurements, Rhein constructed extensive regional full-depth inventories of anthropogenic chemicals such as CFCs and in turn, used these inventories to help reveal the net effect of deep convection on ventilation of Atlantic intermediate and deep waters.

She was a contributing and lead author of the chapters on freshwater resources and their management in the three latest reports of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in which she synthesised our integrated knowledge of climate change impacts on freshwater systems. The IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for these reports.

He has documented his work with an impressive number of articles in peer-reviewed journals. His scientific articles and books have met with great interest. In addition, he has produced 20 geological maps and has written or edited several books on geology and tectonics. His scientific output is remarkable. He is one of the most highly cited geologists in the world.

His international reputation is, of course, reflected in a number of indicators of esteem from his peers. He is a Fellow of the International Water Academy, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, and he has won a number of awards and medals.
