She moved to Australia in the 1990s to do her PhD, having obtained her doctoral degree from the University of Sydney in 1998. Following a postdoc at the University of Cologne in Germany, Pereg joined the University of New England in 2001. She was an active researcher focusing on soil microbiology, the nitrogen cycle and, more recently, on soils and human health.

Although this year’s General Assembly will be held online due to the pandemic, the EGU Public Lecture , which provides insight into a topic in the Earth, planetary, and space sciences of interest to a broad audience, will still take place in partnership with the Austrian Academy of Sciences . The EGU Public Lecture 2021 will be delivered in German by Günter Blöschl, Head of the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering and Engineering Hydrology at the Vienna University of Technology.

She uses novel, self-developed analytical tools, in combination with stable and radioactive isotopes to trace carbon and nitrogen fluxes and examine the effects of abiotic factors on decomposition and nutrient cycling in soils. Over a period of four years, she published 22 papers in leading journals in soil science, being the first author on six of them (h-index: 9 and 1 highly cited paper).

He has revolutionised recent studies of the recent mass loss over timescales of decades in Alaska, High Mountain Asia and Patagonia, providing much more detail than was previously possible. Rumi Nakamura from the Space Research Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Graz is honoured with the 2014 Julius Bartels Medal for her most outstanding contributions to our current understanding of solar-terrestrial relations, in particular the understanding of the dynamics of the terrestrial magnetosphere and ionosphere and the coupling between the two domains, particularly during the substorm cycle.

Further, he developed a Twitter bot that distributes marine job opportunities and news, with about 1700 followers. Besides his scientific contributions, Florian Börgel was actively involved in several outreach activities, such as science for policy briefings with members of the German parliament. In his voluntary work, he is a board member of the Green Party in the city of Rostock, and a member of the citizen-initiated cycling referendum called Radentscheid Rostock.
