Without an in-depth understanding of fundamental science, it can be very difficult to find appropriate solutions to these issues. The EGU is concerned that a diversion of funding away from the ERC , or changes to its bottom-up approach, could result in diminished breakthroughs and less innovation in the future — backsteps that could in turn lead to a long-term reduction in resilience to widespread crises such as COVID -19.

Applications by this deadline will be evaluated by a committee comprised of practicing geoscientists and science journalists. The EGU will inform applicants of the competition outcome in January, and the winner(s) will be invited to attend the EGU General Assembly in Vienna in April 2013.

Teachers are also invited on a voluntary basis, to present classroom strategies and activities that they may have developed with their pupils in the poster session ‘Science in future classrooms’, which is an integral part of the GIFT workshop. Teachers and educators from Europe and around the world can apply to participate in the 2019 edition of GIFT by 12 November 2018 by filling in an online application form .

His PhD work involved a study of the fault rock assemblages and weakening mechanisms along the Zuccale low angle normal fault on the island of Elba, Italy, leading to eight publications. In parallel, together with colleagues in Durham, he pioneered the use of digital mapping techniques in structural geology, and has applied GPS- and laser-based technologies to understand fold curvature and fault surface roughness.
