AS Campfire: Finding Your Path in Academia - Challenges for Migrated Early Career Scientists

Starting an academic career in a new country can be as rewarding as it is challenging. From finding the right supervisor to understanding application processes and navigating interviews, the journey is rarely straightforward—especially for early career scientists who have migrated across countries and academic systems.

The Early Career Scientists (ECS) team of the Atmospheric Sciences division is organizing a Campfire event, where Dr. Ali Hoshyaripour will share his experience-based advice on navigating academia as a migrated early career scientist. He will talk about choosing the right supervisor, building a strong application, preparing for interviews, and managing transitions across institutions and countries.

Following the talk, we’ll open the floor for questions and discussions. This is a great opportunity to gain insights, share concerns, and build connections with fellow ECS members.

The event will take place online (via Zoom) and will last for 1.5 hours.

Speaker

Dr. Ali Hoshyaripour is the leader of the working group “Aerosol and Reactive Tracer Modelling” at the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research Tropospheric Research (IMKTRO) , Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). His research career spans multiple institutions and countries, including the KIT, Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and University of Hamburg in Germany, and the University of Tehran in Iran. Ali holds a Ph.D. in Earth System Sciences from the University of Hamburg, where his dissertation focused on the modulation of ash iron solubility in volcanic eruption plumes. With a background in civil and environmental engineering from Iran, Ali’s personal and professional journey reflects many of the challenges and successes faced by early career researchers working across different cultures, systems, and languages. Alongside his scientific achievements in atmospheric chemistry and climate processes, Ali is deeply engaged in mentoring and supporting early career researchers, making him an ideal speaker for this important and timely session.
