How to Communicate Your Research with the Media: An Introduction

This workshop is part of a three-part Autumn Sci-Comm series which will support Early Career Scientists (ECS) in developing their science communication skills. Organised by the EGU Early Career Scientist task force on outreach and communication, each online event will feature talks delivered by guest speakers from Luminate Media, a multimedia communications company specialising in science communication and digital experiences. Each talk will be followed by a live Q&A session, allowing for discussion and engagement with the broader community.

When a journalist emails you with an interview request, what should you do? And how can you reach out to the media to widely share the results of your cutting-edge research?

Whilst engaging with the media might seem daunting, it is a great way to reach a wider audience with your work, build your public profile, and gain recognition from your institution. For ECS, it’s a valuable skill to hone during your PhD and post-doc that will help you in your further career.

But talking to the media doesn't come without risks: online materials remain in the public domain forever, so it's best to be fully prepared for any eventuality. Luckily, it's possible to anticipate questions and prepare your thoughts in a way that will give you the best chance of success - no matter if you’re drafting a press release, gearing up for a podcast, or prepping for an on-camera interview.

This interactive workshop will include several practical sessions that will give you hands-on experience distilling your ideas into short, memorable sound bites that effectively communicate your most important messages, whilst avoiding getting lost in the details or being taken down unfamiliar rabbit holes. You'll get the opportunity to practice your writing and interview skills, so that when a real media request comes in, you'll be ready for it.

To prepare, successful registrants are asked to draft a 150-200 word text summarising their current research project. (Or a past research project that yielded interesting results.) This will foMailTo:projects@egu.eurm the basis for our interactive exercises during the webinar.

This workshop will last for three hours and conclude with an audience Q&A.

Places for this free workshop are limited to 50 people: if this workshop series appeals to your interests, register here today. Places are limited so please cancel any reservations that you are unable to keep by emailing projects@egu.eu.
