What's new for EGU26? How do you prepare for attending the European Geosciences Union's biggest meeting of the year? From presenting and convening to finding your way round the General Assembly, it can be a lot to take in. This webinar is for all attendees: early career scientists, first-time attendees or experienced attendees in need of a refresh,- we’ve got your back!

This webinar will be presented by three members of the EGU community, who will share their experiences and answer you questions.

This webinar will cover everything you need to know to prepare for attending the General Assembly, including:

  • What is EGU and how does it support you?
  • How to get help if you need it,
  • How do to present at EGU,
  • How to convene a session,
  • How to build your personal programme,
  • How to navigate the in-person and virtual conference center, as well as the city of Vienna,
  • How to keep up-to-date with EGU and General Assembly activities,

The webinar will conclude with an audience Q&A.

Speakers: 

Maria Vittoria Gargiulo (Early Career Scientist Union Representative, 2026-2027) - Maria is a dedicated researcher and educator with extensive expertise in multi-risk analysis of natural and man-made hazardous events, risk communication, and stakeholder engagement. She holds a PhD in Mathematics, Physics, and Applications with the prestigious title of Doctor Europaeus. Maria is also an IMI (International Mediation Institute) qualified Mediator and has a II-level Master’s in Education and International Mediation. As a Positive Peace Activator trained by Rotary International and the Institute of Economics and Peace, Maria's research interests also encompass the positive peace framework within Disaster Risk Reduction. Maria will serve as the EGU Early Career Scientist Union Representative for 2026-2027, following her success in the 2025 EGU Elections. 

Simon D. A. Clark (European Geosciences Union - they/them) - Simon is the Projects Manager at the European Geosciences Union, where they manage programmes for project, organisational and strategic development alongside overseeing the Union's webinars and online events. Simon is also chair of the Climate Hazard and Risk Task Force, and the point of contact for the early career scientists (ECS) network  and Education Committee at the EGU Executive Office. A science communicator with a PhD in climate change and risk, Simon strives to make science accessible by engaging non-expert audiences, from artists and policy-makers to working with the public. Simon also has background in science-policy, having worked for academic, private and (quasi)-non-governmental organisations delivering policy analyses and briefs. They are also a co-founder and former director of an LGBTQIA+ sports charity, with over decade's worth of experience in inclusion and advocacy in academia and beyond.

Stefanie Kaboth-Bahr (Early Career Scientist Union Representative, 2025-2026) - Stefanie is a professor specializing in paleoclimatology, whose research delves into deciphering Earth’s past climates to understand their response to future climate change. In 2023, Stefanie won the EGU Soil System Sciences Division's Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award for her outstanding work in marine sedimentology and terrestrial stratigraphy. Stefanie serves as the EGU Early Career Scientist Union Representative for 2025-2026, where she strives to enhance visibility and amplify the impact of underrepresented groups and minorities within the scientific community as well as ensuring the needs of early career researchers are met at the General Assembly, and throughout the year.
