The 2013 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Frouke Hoogland for the poster/PICO entitled:

Liquid redistribution behind a drainage front in porous media imaged by neutron radiography (Hoogland, F.; Lehmann, P.; Moebius, F.; Vontobel, P.; Or, D.)

I am a PhD student in the department of Environmental Systems Science at the ETH Zurich, under supervision of Dr. Peter Lehmann and Prof. Dani Or. For my PhD project I focus on the characteristics of fluid front displacements in porous media, and how these are affected by the dynamics of the displacement process and by the pore geometry. In the EGU poster we presented a concept of different drainage regions behind a front, where a transition takes place from complete piston-like pore invasions close to the front, to a region where a smooth flow can establish and the drainage rates are dominated by high resistances to flow occurring through corner films. The concept was illustrated by the results of experiments on drainage using methods of fast Xray tomography (pore scale) and neutron radiogragraphy (column scale).
