Marcel Iten is a PhD student in the Space Geodesy group at the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry (IGP), ETH Zurich. After obtaining his Master’s degree in Geomatics Engineering in 2023, he began his PhD with a focus on ionosphere modelling using machine learning.
In his EGU contribution, Marcel investigated how additional ionospheric data sources, such as satellite altimetry and GNSS radio occultation (GNSS-RO), can improve global ionospheric maps (GIMs) in regions lacking ground-based GNSS coverage. Using 80 days of auxiliary satellite altimetry and GNSS-RO observations, he developed an ionospheric background model for oceanic regions. By leveraging the diverse spatial coverage of these auxiliary observations over multiple days, the approach can significantly improve the quality of GIMs in regions with no GNSS data.
