The slow and silent earthquakes that are shaking up seismology
Tectonics and Structural Geology (TS)
The tectonic plates that make up the Earth’s crust are constantly shifting. When they collide, they can cause cataclysmic earthquakes and tsunamis, but sometimes, the effects are far less obvious. Share with your students how scientists are researching ‘silent earthquakes’ and how they might affect us all. Included is a summary of a current research project and an interview with Dr Rebecca Bell. The activity sheet includes discussion points – seven questions students can answer in groups or individually –, and instructions for mimicking a lab experiment with everyday materials.
