Help get your science into policy by becoming a Division Policy Officer!

12 March 2026

EGU's 22 scientific divisions are composed of teams of volunteers helping to support their communities, from the elected Division President, to the scientific officers who help co-ordinate the programme of the General Assembly, but EGU members may not know that there is also a role for people interested in Science for Policy! Seven EGU divisions are currently seeking a new Division Policy Officer; a voluntary position that aims to promote evidence-informed policymaking and support members of the Division in engaging with policymaking processes.

What is the role of a Division Policy Officer?

Division Policy Officers support members of their division in engaging with policy by sharing relevant resources and opportunities, through activities such as participating in, or organising, EGU General Assembly sessions, and engaging directly with the EGU community via social media, EGUwebinars, and EGUcampfires. They collaborate with other volunteers to provide evidence when answering ‘Calls for Evidence’ issued by the European Union and also work closely with the EGU Science for Policy Working Group to provide relevant, timely, and useful scientific information to European policymakers.

Current Division Policy Officer for the Cryospheric Sciences (CR) Division, Marie Cavitte, shared why she volunteers, focusing on the impact the role can have on current EU policymaking.

"I have been a Division Policy Officer with the Crysopheric Sciences Division for two years now, and it has been a really great experience! I really enjoy making sure that our science makes its way to the eyes and ears of European policymakers!"

To get started as a Division Policy Officer previous experience at the science-policy interface is not required, but the Division President will expect potential new officers to demonstrate an interest in policy and a willingness to learn. The Division Policy Officers will each join a collaborative and enthusiastic team of volunteers in various other roles, helping to promote the work of the division and build their community. Each Division Policy Officer will also get support from the EGU Science for Policy Working Group, and the Division Policy Officers in other EGU Divisions.

Sounds great! How do I apply?

Currently seven divisions are seeking a new Division Policy Officer. They are:

To apply, please email the Division President, using the email address listed on the website linked to your chosen division to discover more about the role and if the division you want to join still has a vacancy. The Division President will then let you know if you can still apply, at which time you will need to submit a single document with a combined CV (maximum 2 pages) and cover letter, outlining your motivation and any relevant experience or interest in policy.

If you have any further questions about the Division Policy Officer position, please feel free to contact the Division President in the your Division, or the EGU Policy Office, via Policy Officer Zsanett Gréta Papp (zsanett.papp@egu.eu) or Policy Manager Chloe Hill (policy@egu.eu). If you are interested in Science for Policy volunteering, but your division isn't listed here, reach out to the Division President or the EGU Policy Office staff anyway, as there are many more ways that you can get involved in Science for Policy at EGU!

More information

As Europe’s largest geoscience society, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) is uniquely positioned to facilitate the transfer of knowledge from research into practice and to connect policymakers to the most relevant geoscience experts. In early 2025, EGU’s Science for Policy Working Group created the EGU Climate Hazards and Risk Task Force with the aim of bridging the gap between science and policy, delivering scientific information and expertise to where it is most needed. EGU also supports a range of Science for Policy initiatives including the Science for Policy monthly Newsletter and the Science-Policy Pairing Scheme.
