Roland Pease The 2021 Angela Croome Award is awarded to Roland Pease for outstanding science journalism that illuminates a range of geoscience topics, particularly those of interest to Europe and European citizens, in both radio and print outlets. Roland Pease brings geoscience to life on the BBC show Science in Action. He expertly spins off the news of the day to enlighten listeners about what Earth sciences stories are happening around the world and how those affect people’s lives, including in Europe.

His is doing his PhD with Lee Jae-Boem under the supervision of Prof. Jeong-Seok Yang. His research is the impact of climate change on groundwater storage in mountainous area. The study presented at EGU concerns groundwater recharge restoration in urban area using LID/BMP: Study case of Benin, West Africa.

He has recently extended this to 3D modelling of wave and tidal forcing on groundwater, morphodynamics and contaminant fate in natural beaches. His work allows, for the first time, mechanistic investigations of important engineering problems such as design of beach dewatering – a ‘green engineering’ means to combat beach erosion – as well as fundamental phenomena such as the role of wave-produced turbulence in coastal sediment transport.

Monique Petitdidier The 2011 Ian McHarg Medal is awarded to Monique Petitdidier for her exemplar work in support of African scientists and her recognition of the importance of outreach and ‘science citizenship’.
Home / Jobs / PhD Position in Oceanography: Methane Seepage Dynamics
This interdisciplinary study investigates the biogeochemical and geological controls on methane seeps in the northern US Atlantic Margin. By integrating geochemical, microbiological, and geophysical data, we aim to investigate the genesis of seep fluids and migration pathways, quantify methane oxidation processes in a modern seep, while reconstructing methane seepage characteristics and gas hydrate stability in the past.

Janek Walk Janek is a postdoc at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg with a research focus on the processes and evolution of dryland geomorphology and soils – largely based on field studies in North Chile, Northwest Namibia and Central Asia. Outside of drylands, he further works on the human impact on fluvial systems in Central Europe.

In addition, in autumn 2018 EGU established a Working Group on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion with the aim of promoting and supporting equality in the Earth, planetary and space sciences, with particular focus on EGU activities.
Home / Awards & medals / Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky Medal / 2016 / Carlos M. Duarte
Duarte for his outstanding contributions to biogeosciences, linking marine communities to global change and element cycling. Carlos Duarte is Professor and Tarek Ahmed Juffali Chair in Marine Ecology at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology of Saudi Arabia. After obtaining a PhD from McGill University (Montreal, Canada) in 1987, he held research positions and research professorships with the Spanish National Research Council, was Winthorp Professor and Director of the Oceans Institute of the University of Western Australia from 2011 to 2015, and is currently Adjunct Professor of the University of Tromsø.
