Home / News / Press releases / Despite willingness to speak to the media, journalists say scientists often do not follow through, fearing their science will be misrepresented: EGU Media Survey
Dijkstra et al., 2015; Stewart and Nield, 2013 More information The European Geosciences Union ( EGU ) is Europe’s premier geosciences union, dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the Earth, planetary, and space sciences for the benefit of humanity, worldwide. It is a non-profit interdisciplinary learned association of scientists founded in 2002 with headquarters in Munich, Germany.

Beyond his scientific contributions, VanderBeek has played a key role in mentoring students and fostering the next generation of seismologists. His involvement in open-source software development and scientific outreach, including contributions to podcasts and field expeditions, has broadened the impact of his research beyond academia.

Perhaps the best example of this so far has been her collaboration with a paleontologist to constrain (large) subsidence rates in the forearc of the Central American subduction zone, work that provided the key observational evidence to demonstrate that this margin has been the site of large-scale “tectonic erosion” during the past 6Ma.

The recently published synthesis Deformation of Earth Materials demonstrates the breadth of Karato’s contributions to our understanding of the mechanical behaviour of geological materials and the implications for geodynamics. Karato is a giant in the field of mantle dynamics and structure including particularly the measurement of mineral properties in the laboratory.

Most of the topics that are treated in the NH Division are also treated in other EGU divisions, which is expected due to the intrinsic transversal nature of the NH Division. The NH Division is one of the historical Divisions of the EGU that was established when EGU was founded and has been and is one of the largest divisions to which many geo-scientists provide steadily contributions of papers and ideas over the years.

Corn Belt in hours, which is unprecedented,” Guan said. The breakthrough will have real-time, practical benefits for U.S. farmers coping with the increasing severity of droughts, as documented in a number of recent studies. “Precision agriculture is one of our major targets.

I am also proud of the 5000 waived registrations for this meeting, for scientists from lower- and middle-income countries as well as for undergraduate and MSc students, demonstrating the inclusiveness of an online meeting. Finally, there is a sense of anticipation. We hope to organise EGU22 with a significant in-person component in Vienna.

Using models and real data, we found these measures could have lowered the flood's impact by 25 % and saved millions in damage. Therefore, investing in such prevention can be cheaper than paying for repairs after disasters. This session will focus on modelling of past, present, and future tides, novel methods for tide predictions, advances in instrumentation and data processing, new findings from the analysis of historical tide gauge data, and understanding of secular changes in tides due to sea-level change and other environmental forcing factors.
