Computer simulations are representations of the real world, which scientists use to find out what our planet will look like in the future. These simulations, or computer models, use mathematical equations to describe how different parts of the Earth – atmosphere, oceans, land – work, and how they will look like in the years and even centuries to come.

29 February 2016 Lots of people enjoy fishing in rivers and freshwater streams around the world. Many people fish standing in the water, using waterproof boots – called waders – that extend all the way from the foot to the waist or the chest.
Home / News / Webinars and online events / EGU Science for Policy Hangout
Join us on the first Monday of every month to discuss how researchers can more effectively engage with policymaking, get the scoop on upcoming science for policy opportunities, and virtually mingle in a relaxed, informal environment. You’ll be met with people working at the science-policy interface as well as others who may be interested in doing so!
Home / News / EGU news / Nominate candidates for EGU awards and medals
The list includes Union Medals for established scientists, Division Medals for mid-career scientists, as well as division and Union-wide awards for early career scientists. In relation with its General Assemblies, the Union presents a number of special awards, such as the Outstanding Student Poster and PICO ( OSPP ) Awards. These aim to further improve the overall quality of poster and PICO presentations and most importantly, to foster the excitement of students and early career researchers in presenting their work in the form of a poster and/or PICO .
Home / Awards & medals / Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Awards / 2014 / András Zlinszky
András Zlinszky is a biologist and remote sensing scientist, working with the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformation of the Vienna University of Technology, and the Centre for Ecological Research of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He finished his PhD in 2013. This study was carried out in the framework of the Changehabitats2 project for developing airborne remote sensing in support of ecological conservation mapping for the EU Habitat Directive.

Laure Zanna OS Ocean Sciences The 2006 Young Scientist Outstanding Poster Paper (YSOPP) Award is awarded to Laure Zanna for the poster/PICO entitled: Non-normal Amplification of the Thermohaline Circulation (Zanna, L.; Tziperman, E.; Heimbach, P.) Click here to download the poster/PICO file. Laure is a Ph.D. student in the department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University. Her thesis focuses on the non-normal dynamics of the thermohaline circulation in present-day climate.

Click here to download the poster/PICO file. Philip Brunner works at the Institute of Hydromechanics and Water Resources Management (IHW), Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. His Ph.D. project focuses on modelling water and salt fluxes through a agriculturally used basin in Xinjiang, China in order to understand and quantify the process of salination.
Home / Awards & medals / Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Awards / 2012 / Andrea Steiner
Click here to download the poster/PICO file. Andrea Steiner just received her master’s degree in Meteorology from the University of Vienna and is currently working as a junior researcher within the Department of Meteorology and Geophysics. Her thesis and her work focus on the quality control of operational meteorological in situ observations, in particular, on the improvement of the department’s quality control system ‘VERA-QC’.
Home / Awards & medals / Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Awards / 2015 / Christer van der Meeren
His research aims at understanding when and where ionospheric GPS/GNSS scintillations (rapid fluctuations of radio waves) occur in the high-latitude ionosphere. This understanding is of interest when trying to forecast and mitigate problems experienced by GNSS receivers due to ionospheric irregularities. The poster at EGU2015 is a case study of scintillations observed when a polar cap patch (an “island” of enhanced plasma density in the ionosphere) drifts into the nightside aurora.
Home / Awards & medals / Outstanding Student Poster and PICO (OSPP) Awards / 2016 / Matthias Ellmer
Click here to download the poster/PICO file. Matthias Ellmer is a third year PhD student at the Institute of Geodesy of the Technical University Graz (Austria). As part of the GRACE research team in the working group of theoretical geodesy and satellite geodesy, he investigates the challenges and opportunities in processing data from the upcoming GRACE Follow-On satellite gravimetry mission.
