This gif animation shows the region around Panmah and Choktoi glaciers with surrounding tributaries. Glaciers are shown in light blue to cyan, clouds in white, water in dark blue, vegetation in green and bare terrain in pink to brown. The black lines that appear on the sides of the image are related to an instrument failure on Landsat in 2003. Credit: F.
Home / Awards & medals / Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (OSPP) Awards / 2024 / Adele Zaini
In her work presented at EGU24, Adele uses the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM2) to explore the climatic impacts of the expected poleward migration of the boreal forest in the Arctic due to rising global temperatures. The study focuses on evaluating the radiative impact of the vegetation-BVOC-SOA-cloud feedback in comparison to the effects of surface albedo changes.
Home / Awards & medals / Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (OSPP) Awards / 2022 / Angelica M. Castillo Tibocha
Castillo is a Ph.D. candidate at the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and affiliated to the Physics department of the University Potsdam in Germany. The main focus of her research is the application and development of data assimilation tools for the field of Space Weather. Data assimilation techniques allow us to blend satellite observations and physics-based models in a statistically optimal manner.

Her research is focused on monsoon systems as one intriguing mosaic piece in the complexity of the global atmospheric circulation. Her work includes the analysis of climate models to understand how monsoon systems are projected to change under global warming. She also uses econometric methods to understand better how these changes influence local economy.

This approach demands an efficient mutation scheme, which was achieved through hyperparameterization – the definition of a simpler, hidden logic behind the mutation of the parameter field. As a welcome side effect, this can guarantee conformance to user-specified geological characterizations, an important aspect in hydrogeological models. The poster illustrated synthetic results for three different geological characterizations.

At the EGU 2025 general assembly he presented the first application of the analytic element method for contaminant transport. The solution provides steady-state contaminant plumes formed in an electron donor-acceptor system in horizontal and vertical two-dimensional aquifers. The model can represent various complex setups of boundary conditions, while still providing an exact analytical solution within the domain.

Currently, she is developing a novel method to extract hydroxylamine from soils and determine its concentration and 15 N enrichment using high-resolution mass spectrometry. This approach can be applied in 15 N tracer studies to investigate, for instance, the contribution of hydroxylamine to soil nitrous oxide emissions. At EGU25, she presented her latest progress in developing this method.
