Home / Awards & medals / Arthur Holmes Medal & Honorary Membership / 2026 / Michael Paul Searle
He has documented his work with an impressive number of articles in peer-reviewed journals. His scientific articles and books have met with great interest. In addition, he has produced 20 geological maps and has written or edited several books on geology and tectonics. His scientific output is remarkable. He is one of the most highly cited geologists in the world.

In addition, she participated in the discovery of a new climate feedback mechanism associated with changes in the transport of ozone due to an increase in the strength of the stratospheric circulation under global warming.

He has applied systematically the ideas and methods from nonlinear dynamics, in particular, bifurcation theory and the ergodic theory of dynamical systems, to planetary-scale atmospheric and oceanic flows. He has used the successive-bifurcation approach (as presented in his 1987 book with Steve Childress and in many of his 275 research and review papers) to proceed from the analysis of simple flows with high temporal regularity and spatial symmetry, to the analysis of observed flows with their complex behaviour in space and time.

Home / Awards & medals / Jean Dominique Cassini Medal & Honorary Membership / 2016 / Michel Mayor
The research of Mayor and his team has had a unique and major impact in the field of exoplanets. The detection in 1995 of 51 Peg b, the first extrasolar planet orbiting a solar-type star, by Mayor and Didier Queloz, initiated a fantastic and rapidly developing new domain of modern astrophysics, re-actualising fundamental questions about our origins and the place of humankind in the Universe.

Preuß studied samples of hair-ice-bearing wood collected in the winters of 2012, 2013 and 2014 in forests near Brachbach in western Germany. She analysed the wood samples using microscopic techniques and identified eleven different species of fungi.
