Art-Science Working Group

As humanity grapples with interdisciplinary environmental and societal challenges including, but not limited to, climate change, resource mitigation and energy use, Earth, planetary and space scientists are seeking new tools and methods to communicate, interpret and inspire their science. Non-traditional forms of science outreach, particularly the use of visual media, poetry and music, have gained popularity given the power with which they can be used to convey not just data, but also the urgency, complexity and emotional weight of these global challenges. Not only does this shift reflect a broader cultural response to environmental or eco-anxiety, but it also fosters collaborations by bridging scientific research and artistic practice. This collaboration can take many forms, from making key scientific messaging more understandable for scientific and non-scientific audiences alike, to stimulating new research concepts and questions, to inspiring new modes of co-creation that go beyond purely communicating scientific concepts.

The EGU’s Art-Science working group aims to promote collaboration between science and the arts through sharing of expertise and best practices, providing examples, resources and opportunities for the community. The Working Group’s activities will be focused around the annual EGU General Assembly, with the aim of extending the conversation throughout the year.

The Working Group is supported by the EGU Events Manager, and all Working Group activities are overseen and approved by the EGU Council and Executives.
