What are the fundamentals for sharing science online? How do you build an online community? What common obstacles should you look out for?
This webinar highlight some of the fundamental practices for delivering accessible and engaging scientific content online. Presented by science communicators Simon Clark (Youtube; author) and Simon D. A. Clark (EGU), attendees can expect an overview of how to engage audiences in the digital realm, including sharing key tips, their experience as engaging audiences, and what platforms work (and don't work) for science communication.
The webinar will last for one hour and will conclude with an audience Q&A.
Speakers:
Simon Clark - Simon is an award-winning science communicator and author from Bath, UK. He holds a master’s degree in Physics from St Peter’s College, University of Oxford, and a PhD in atmospheric physics from the University of Exeter. In 2023 he was made an Honorary Industrial Fellow of the University of Bristol. Since starting his YouTube channel in 2010, his channel has accrued over 700,000 subscribers and over 90 million lifetime views. Simon’s debut book, Firmament (2022), is a comprehensive introduction to atmospheric science, bridging the gap between weather and climate change. Published by Hodder & Stoughton, it was named a Waterstones Science Book of the Year. In addition to his own videos, Simon has collaborated with brands include Merck, TED, the European Central Bank, Roborace, the UK Central Laser Facility, the BBC, and has delivered invited talks at national and international universities and conferences, including events at the European Parliament, CERN, and the European Geosciences Union.
Simon D. A. Clark (they/them) - Simon is the Projects Manager at the European Geosciences Union, where they manage programmes for project, organisational and strategic development alongside overseeing the Union's webinars and online events. Simon is also chair of the Climate Hazard and Risk Task Force, and the point of contact for the early career scientists (ECS) network and Education Committee at the EGU Executive Office. A science communicator with a PhD in climate change and risk, Simon strives to make science accessible by engaging non-expert audiences, from artists and policy-makers to working with the public. Simon also has background in science-policy, having worked for academic, private and (quasi)-non-governmental organisations delivering policy analyses and briefs. They are also a co-founder and former director of an LGBTQIA+ sports charity, with over decade's worth of experience in inclusion and advocacy in academia and beyond.
