Dr. Nauzet Hernández Hernández (Institute of Oceanography and Climate Change of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria)  - "Reading the carbon pump backwards: a respiration-based view of carbon export"

The biological carbon pump can be seen as a carbon budget: what is fixed by phytoplankton and exported from the surface ocean must balance what is respired in the twilight zone plus what reaches the deep ocean. Traditionally, this budget has been assessed from the supply side, measuring how much sinking particulate organic carbon is produced at the surface and how much of it reaches the deep ocean. 

Yet this budget rarely balances. Respiration in the twilight zone often exceeds the carbon supplied by sinking particles, sometimes by several fold. In this talk, I will explore what we can learn by reading the pump backwards, using deep-ocean respiration to estimate the carbon fluxes needed to sustain it, and from them, export efficiency and flux attenuation.
