LGBT+ equality: tools and techniques for influencing change

This webinar explores a range of influential techniques for effective communication and actions to promote LGBTQIA+ equality in the geosciences and beyond. Drawing from the experiences and expertise of three speakers, it covers mainstream strategies for building a team, crafting proposals, negotiating outcomes, and making a strong case for change. Participants will learn about non-violent communication as a powerful tool to foster understanding, develop personal power, and create common ground.

The session also examines how to engage with resistant audiences, campaign strategically, and the historical context of protest tactics—balancing radical and practical approaches. The key takeaway is that successful change requires diverse actions working together, supported by data and science to guide decision-making.

This webinar will be recorded and uploaded to the EGU YouTube Channel following the event: https://www.youtube.com/egu.

Speakers:

Sara Tremi Proietti - I have fifteen years of experience in public administration and four as a professional facilitator. I specialize in conflict management and in designing efficient, inclusive, and collaborative processes. I am a certified Sociocracy Facilitator and have recently enrolled in the pathway to become a Certified Nonviolent Communication Trainer. I bring systemic and foresight approaches to my work with individuals and organizations, focusing on creating enabling spaces where people can imagine possible futures, navigate change, and make collective decisions with greater awareness, inclusion, and creativity.

Mike Prior-Jones - I’m a long-running member of the EGU Pride group and work at Cardiff University in the UK as a glaciologist. I’m a keen advocate for change and have been involved in various attempts to influence management and get policies changed throughout my career – in companies, research centres, universities and in EGU. I also do some campaigning and lobbying for better facilities for walking and cycling in my local area.

Jaz Millar - Alongside my career as a cold-climate microbiologist, I have been involved in LGBT advocacy as a group coordinator, trainer, event manager and political activist for the last 12 years. Current projects include running Cardiff's grassroots Pride event The Big Queer Picnic Cardiff and the Wales Trans Rights Coalition, and in the past I have participated in a government select committee on the UK's Equality and Gender Recognition Acts. My workshops explore the philosophies and strategies of the successful activists that have come before us to bring you inspiration for the future.
