Description

Understanding how hurricanes affect forests is a task that cannot be tackled by one scientific discipline alone. In Columbia University in New York City, this recognition has led to a unique collaboration between a data scientist and a tropical ecologist. Get your students thinking about big data, AI and machine learning – and how new technologies can help us understand the impacts of natural hazards. This resource includes an interview with data scientist Prof Tian Zheng. The activity sheet includes ‘talking points’ to enable students to reflect on Tian’s research plus activities relating to big data.
