Emergency support

If you are a researcher in the field of Earth, planetary and space science affected by an emergency situation, EGU offers a variety of support options to help you gain access to EGU’s range of tools, resources and opportunities. Key amongst these is the EGU Emergency Support Policy.

EGU Emergency Support Policy

In order to streamline access to EGU’s Emergency Support, any researcher in the field of Earth, planetary and space science from a country, region or community identified by the UNHCR’s emergency declarations protocol is automatically eligible to access funding and logistical support from EGU.

The full list of emergency declarations currently supported is available on the UNHCR website.

In addition to this list, the EGU volunteer Council may also vote for communities to be added to the list. These additions are eligible for support for a period of 1 year from the date of addition, unless a vote is made to extend their presence on this list.

Current regions, countries or communities added to the EGU extended support list are:

To extend the emergency support list, a member of Council must make a proposal to Council to add the identified community to the emergency support list. That community will be voted upon by Council, with a majority vote of approval adding the community to the list. The start date for support for that community will be the date that vote is approved and will be subject to the same time-limits as all other emergency support.

Accessing EGU Emergency Support

If you qualify for the Emergency Support either through the UNHCR emergency declarations list or the EGU Council extended support list, you can apply for the support you require using the following procedure:

  1. Identify the type of emergency declaration made (region, country, community, etc).
  2. If the declaration is not related to a region or nationality that could be identified by affiliation with a national institution, a personal statement must submitted on behalf of the individual to qualify for the waiver.
  3. Evidence of the emergency declaration or extended support list vote must be provided.
  4. If you have been displaced by an emergency, you are still eligible for support from your current place of residence; please provide the affiliation of your original, impacted institution, even if you are now affiliated with a new institution (either temporary or permanent).
  5. To access a publication waiver for an EGU journal, evidence must be submitted on behalf of the corresponding author (first, corresponding or contact author) to qualify for the waiver.
  6. Complete the application form, selecting the type of support required.
  7. Submit the form and await a response with the details of the waiver/support requested. If you do not get a response within 1 week, please contact emergency-support@egu.eu.

Additional support

In addition to the EGU Emergency Support Policy, EGU offers a number of other forms of financial support and assistance:
