UNU-FLORES aims to contribute to the resolution of pressing challenges to the sustainable use and integrated management of environmental resources, such as water, soil and waste. UNU-FLORES strives to advance the development of integrated management strategies that take into consideration the impact of global change on the sustainable use of environmental resources. To this end, the Institute engages in research, teaching, advanced training, capacity development and dissemination of knowledge. The Institute is located in Dresden, Germany.

The Director is the chief academic and administrative officer of UNU-FLORES and has overall responsibility for the direction, organisation, administration, and programmes of the Institute under the direction of the Rector of UNU. S/he will be responsible for ensuring the growth of the Institute thematically and financially. The Director will be responsible for ensuring high-quality research outputs as well as for obtaining a diversification of funding for the Institute’s programmes. S/he will also contribute to implement the UNU Gender Action Plan by mainstreaming gender throughout the Institute’s research programmes and achieving gender parity.
The Director’s qualifications should lend to UNU-FLORES the necessary prestige in the international scholarly community; guarantee scientific excellence and provide leadership and guidance for the conduct of UNU-FLORES activities. The Director will oversee the strengthening of the scientific foundations of the research programmes, and will ensure that quality research outputs and policy recommendations are channeled to the wider UN system, policy makers, and other non-academic stakeholders in a manner which is compelling and accessible, ensuring maximum uptake and impact.
Candidates must have:
- a doctoral qualification in the natural sciences or engineering related to water, soil and/or waste management;
- a strong research background and publications in areas related to the issues of water, soil and/or waste management;
- a distinguished record of effective administration and research programme leadership, with evidence of research excellence, growth, and cost-effectiveness;
- strong international fundraising skills and demonstrable success in securing support from multiple funders and diversifying funding sources;
- experience in supervising researchers and supporting them to achieve scientific and publishing excellence;
- demonstrated experience in sound financial and human resource management;
- the ability to interact with colleagues of diverse cultural backgrounds, and with political representatives and communities in both industrialized and developing countries;
- strong communication skills;
- demonstrated sensitivity to gender issues;
- proven commitment to issues of human development and welfare; and,
- fluency in English essential; fluency in German and official languages of the United Nations desirable.

Approximate net annual salary of US$ 115,735.99 including post adjustment, which is subject to change. The post carries the standard set of UN entitlements/benefits, including participation in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund, the possibility of participation in a health insurance programme, education grant for eligible children, removal expenses and home leave. The Director of the Institute shall be appointed by the Rector after consultation with the Advisory Board and the Chair of the UNU Council.
Duration of contract
The Director shall normally serve for four years and may be eligible for reappointment for one more term of four years or less, subject to satisfactory work performance. Conditions of the service of the Director shall be determined by the Rector in accordance with University practices. The mandatory retirement age in the United Nations is 65 years.
Starting date: It is expected that the appointee will take up the position by September 2018 at the latest.
