The Jackson lab examines the different ways that people affect the Earth. Our projects combine basic science and policy solutions to issues such as climate change, energy extraction, and land use. We’re currently examining the effects of climate change and droughts on forest mortality and grassland ecosystems. We recently published the first studies looking at fracking and drinking water quality and used laser technologies to map thousands of natural gas leaks across cities such as Boston, Manhattan, and Washington, D.C.

Job description

Stanford University, Stockholm University, and Ohio State University seek a full-time postdoctoral earth scientist in remote sensing, geospatial analyses or biogeosciences to improve spatial scaling of methane emissions in boreal and arctic environments, initially in Canada and the United States. The successful candidate will have expertise in remote sensing and geospatial analysis—to refine mapping of land forms relevant to the methane cycle— with experience in field work on methane emissions or northern soils optional, but desirable. Project investigators include Rob Jackson (jacksonlab.stanford.edu), Gustaf Hugelius (su.se/english/profiles/chuge), and Kaiguang Zhao (http://senr.osu.edu/our-people/kaiguang-zhao). This international collaboration is part of a larger effort to improve understanding of sources and sinks in the global methane cycle through the Global Carbon Project (globalcarbonproject.org). The postdoctoral scientist will have opportunities to interact with other researchers examining wetland and tropical methane emissions on the same grant and to link with other international efforts, including the Permafrost Carbon Network and the new EU H2020 Nunataryuk consortium (nunataryuk.org). There are also potential opportunities to join field campaigns to the Canadian Arctic in 2018 or 2019.
