Job description

The Seismogenic Zone Monitoring Research Group, Research and Development (R&D) Center for Earthquake and Tsunami (CEAT), Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is soliciting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher who will work independently on a research project titled “Compound Disaster Mitigation on the Great Earthquakes and Tsunamis around the Nankai Trough” (FY2013~FY2020) conducted with external funding from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

Research Description
Project tasks will include the following;
・Rearranging historical documents for the previous Nankai Trough great earthquake and evaluating the tsunami trace heights 
・Evaluating the tsunami source area based on historical document analysis and tsunami sediment transport modeling
・Performing other duties as designated by the department

Working Conditions
(1) Number of positions:
1 position for a Postdoctoral Researcher

(4) Contract Period:
May 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020.

*Appointment date is negotiable. *One contract period is a maximum of 1 fiscal year. The contract will not be renewed. *The contract period will end at the conclusion of this funding. *In accordance with JAMSTEC’s bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.  *This position is a non-tenure-track, fixed-term employee position.

d) Publication (achievement) list including thesis titles (1 copy) *Please list publications in refereed (peer-reviewed) journals separately from unrefereed publications (1 copy).
e) A list of competitive research funds awarded to the applicant (1 copy). *If you have not been awarded any, include “none” in the list.
f) 2 (or fewer) representative publications (1 copy).
g) A letter of recommendation from a senior research scientist. The person providing the recommendation should send the letter directly to JAMSTEC by POST or E-mail. In the case of E-mail, a signed letter in PDF format should be attached. The applicant’s name should be specified on the envelope or in the title of the E-mail. Letters of recommendation written by a JAMSTEC employee or a JAMSTEC visiting scientist will not be accepted.

(2) Submission:
The required documents must be sent by POST or E-mail and should reach JAMSTEC on or before the closing date. *Please write “PERSONNEL, FY2019 Nankai Postdoctoral Researcher, CEAT” (in red) on the front of the envelope.
