The University of Beira Interior is nowadays a landmark institution at national and international level of education, research, innovation and entrepreneurship. IDL’s core mission focuses on the use of quantitative science to unravel our Planet’s Dynamics and to respond to major societal challenges posed by Climate Change, to promote sustainable use of Earth and Energy Resources, and exposure to Natural Hazards. As an integrated Earth System Science Institute, IDL actively promotes cross-discipline interactions from fields as diverse as Geology, Geodesy, Solid Earth Geophysics, Physical Oceanography, Hydrology, Meteorology and Climate, Environmental Science and Engineering.

Job description: Researcher Position 36-months contract
Start date: April 2019
University of Beira Interior (Portugal) is hiring a Researcher for the project SHAZAM: Seismicity and HAzards of the sub-saharian Atlantic Margin. SHAZAM project aims at investigating the role of asthenospheric dynamics in the intraplate deformation and seismicity of the Gulf of Guinea. The researcher will take a key role in this project in 1) leading the strategy for maintaining and deploying new seismic stations in the Gulf of Guinea what involves fieldwork, 2) contributing to the seismic hazard assessment in this intraplate region and 3) evaluating the seismic anisotropy.
More on the project SHAZAM:
This project will build on existing local geodetic and seismic network to unravel geodynamic processes behind the intraplate seismicity and deformation allowing to enhance the related seismic risk mitigation. SHAZAM project focuses on the Gulf of Guinea and adjacent Western Africa as study area and will achieve its objective by combining seismicity, seismic anisotropy, geodetic and tectonic data as well as numerical modelling. SHAZAM Project will start by reinforcing seismic and geodetic monitoring network in the study area. The analysis of seismic, geodetic and geomorphological data will be used to conduct a probabilistic seismic hazard assessment. The integration of geophysical data in the region of the Cameroon Volcanic Line will contribute together with seismic anisotropy, to provide constraints on the asthenospheric dynamics that will be further addressed by numerical modelling.

The project involves three main institutions in Portugal: University of Beira Interior (PI: Stéphanie Dumont, Rui Fernandes), Institute Superior Technical (João Fonseca, Susana Vilanova, Sandra Heleno, Pedro Pina) and Instituto Dom Luiz/University of Lisbon (Susana Custódio, Graça Silveira, Marta Neres). The project will work in close collaboration with local and AfricaArray partners.
Academic degree: PhD in seismology/geophysics
Other requirements: Expertise in seismicity analysis. Good programming skills.

Salary: The gross monthly salary entitle is stipulated in clause 1 of article 5 of the Regulatory Decree No. 11-A/2017, of December 29th, corresponding to level 33 of the Consolidated Table of Allowances, as approved by Government Order No. 1553-C/2008, of December 31st, being 2,128.34 Euros per month, plus Holiday and Christmas supplements, and food allowance, in value and conditions for workers with a legal relationship of employment under the Labour Code.
